In 1994, he became the first non-American-born managing director of the firm, a position he held for nine years. He sat on the boards of Goldman Sachs, Procter & Gamble, and American Airlines. He advised presidents, prime ministers, and CEOs. He founded the Indian School of Business and co-founded the American India Foundation.
