Charlotte's father Dave bought her mother legally before prices soared—but Charlotte herself was born in secret, her existence a crime punishable by death. When news breaks that fifty women were captured from a hideout and Seekers are now authorized to raid private homes, her parents refuse to turn her in. Days later, the Seekers smash through their door. Dave falls dead on the living room floor. Charlotte is ripped from her house and thrown into an armored van.
