The novel begins with Selena in chains. Her identity has been erased by an enemy's memory magic, her mind wiped clean of everything that made her who she is. She wakes in a dungeon with no name, no history, no understanding of why she is there. What follows is not a gentle restoration. Orion Nightbane, the Unseelie King, shatters her amnesia by forcing her to relive her worst memories on loop: her mate Draven's wings whipped raw, her parents' throats slit by Empress Jessina, Draven staring at her with manufactured hatred. Twelve hours of this breaks through the magical barrier, but it also breaks something else open in Selena. When her memories return, they return with a grief so overwhelming that she reaches for the one thing that can make her feel something else: her magic, which creates emotions from nothing and produces euphoric pleasure in the process. By the time she stops, a condemned prisoner is dead and her addiction has begun. This is not a story about heroes who rise above their flaws. It is a story about people who are drowning and keep reaching for each other anyway. Selena spends much of the novel fighting a compulsion that threatens to consume her, a magic that feels too good to resist. Draven, her fated mate, fights to save her from herself while also fighting a war against an empire that has ruled for six thousand years. Orion, the Unseelie King, loses an eye and nearly loses himself. Isera, who has spent her entire life refusing to need anyone, discovers that revenge heals nothing and that family is not a weakness.
