When Zig was five years old, his father took a management position at a farm in Yazoo City, and the family moved to the Mississippi Delta. Then, in 1932, when Zig was just six years old, his father died of a stroke. The Great Depression was ravaging the country. The family had no savings, no safety net, and no clear path forward. His mother, left alone with eleven children still at home, faced an impossible situation. Yet she refused to surrender to despair. She was a woman of profound faith, and she instilled in her children the belief that God had a plan for their lives. She taught them that character mattered more than circumstances, that honesty was non-negotiable, and that hard work was a form of worship. Zig grew up working. He sold newspapers on street corners. He worked in grocery stores. He took whatever jobs he could find to help keep the family afloat. The lessons he learned during those years stayed with him for the rest of his life.
